Commentary:

Thor's hammer took some damage last issue, so his big play is to take the hammer to...Pittsburgh. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, not only does Pittsburgh produce steel, but they also have furnaces hot enough to heal the hammer of a Norse god. He is also finally able to prove to Odin that Loki cheated during the trial of the gods (which started back here).

Thor tries to get back to his normal life after the trial, but he finds that the members of the Avengers have completely changed, and his nurse Jane Foster is nowhere to be found. But before he gets anywhere with these things, he'll have to fight off the Absorbing Man, returned to earth by the ever mischievous Loki.

I also would like to point out that Odin wears a golden crown with an enormous owl symbol on it. Just the latest in Norse god fashion.

The quest for the Odinsword continues in this issue's backup tale.

Commentary:

The team engages in a rather uninspired fight with the Frightful Four. Torch doesn't refer to Trapster as Paste-Pot Pete. If a guy calls himself Paste-Pot Pete, even once, you should never let him forget it. Let that be a lesson to all you inspiring super heroes and villains.

The Frightful Four are able to brainwash Torch just as they were Thing. Also, this story isn't wrapped up at issue's end, but will continue again. A three-parter from Stan.

Commentary:

The Swordsman can't beat the Avengers (after all, he is just a guy with a sword going up against a bunch of super heroes), so this makes him a great candidate to become a henchman of the Mandarin, last seen here. That doesn't go smoothly, as Swordsman then wants to fight Mandarin. Swordsman really needs to make friends with somebody, even if it's Mole Man.

However, things aren't going much better for our heroes, as nobody respects the leadership of Captain America. This is a far cry from Cap's reputation as Marvel's best leader. Still, I guess it shows he's got room to grow. Also, Quicksilver and Hawkeye aren't exactly the most stand up teammates a fella could want. Things calm down for some strange reason when Quicksilver proves he can run faster than Hawkeye can shoot an arrow.

Things end with Swordsman in a morally ambiguous way, so we'll have to see where he crops up next, and whether or not it's on the side of the angels.

Commentary:

Well, Spider-Man's graduating high school, and we're only twenty eight issues in! I have seen a quote somewhere before that Stan had Peter graduate so early in the timeline simply because he didn't think his creations were going to last as long as they did. Makes a lot of sense. I have to imagine that despite all the hyperbolic jargon that opens and closes just about every Stan Lee joint, it would be hard for him to envision that they'd be releasing an Avengers movie in the year 2012.

Anyway, Spider-Man spends some time with Mr. Smythe, his buddy who created the Spider-Man hunting robot, in an attempt to retrieve his costume. Unfortunately, Smythe's scientist friend wants to make off with his half of the recent liquid metal alloy they've been making. He spills it on himself and becomes T one thous, I mean, the Molten Man, a bad guy. How come every scientist in the Marvel Universe can't replicate the results of any one of their famous experiments? Isn't repetition like half the battle in science? Anyways, Spidey beats yellow Colossus into submission.

Commentary:

Just as we recently saw a shakeup in the dynamic of the mag Strange Tales, so too is there a change in Tales to Astonish. The adventures of Giant Man and Wasp have been replaced with Namor the Sub-Mariner. I guess I wasn't the only person tired of watching Hank Pym saddle up on a giant ant.

It will be interesting to see if Namor becomes a more sympathetic character in stories that focus on his viewpoint as opposed to the Fan 4's.

In Hulk, it is finally indicated that he gets stronger the angrier becomes. I had previously mentioned that this popular association with the Hulk was not a part of his origin, but now it has come into play. He is also struggling, as after being shot, he needs to remain the Hulk forever, or he will die! I'm guessing forever doesn't turn out to actually be all that long...

Commentary:

Tony Stark's cousin Morgan is a free loader. He decides that he's had enough, but instead of flying the straight and narrow to make something of himself, he conspires with Count Nefaria to undo the good work of his superior relatives. He tries to convince the world that Tony Stark is losing his sanity by making him "see" things. But then, a few aliens show up, and it makes it look as though Stark was sane all along. Tony doesn't catch on to Nefaria, or even of his cousin's duplicity, so we'll have to see if this is examined later.

Meanwhile, back in the WWII era, Cap is still brainwashed by Red Skull. Nothing too magical brings him back to reality; perhaps Steve Rogers just can't perform truly evil acts. Red Skull's full of evil ideas, though, so there's plenty of adventure left for Cap and Bucky.

Commentary:

Well, apparently some people love Nick Fury stories, as he's now appearing as the lead feature in Strange Tales, replacing the adventures of Thing and Human Torch (Dr. Strange remains). And "present day" Fury is a more interesting read than WWII Fury, at least through one story.

Fury has an eye patch and is now a colonel, as we've seen him elsewhere. Anyway, he gets cloned, which is kind of crazy. Then, the clones get killed, thus proving someone is after our pal Nick. This is when Fury gets recruited into SHIELD, Marvel's covert spy organization. We're also introduced to HYDRA, the terrorist agency that makes for a natural nemesis to SHIELD. HYDRA is a forward-thinking equal opportunity group, as we witness their recruit of the first female agent into HYDRA ranks. Fury's got a lot of work to do.

In Strange's tale (hey, that's almost the name of the magazine!) he searches for the meaning of "Eternity," the word the Ancient One keeps muttering in his illness. Unfortunately, all he finds is a guy named Baskerville, who's really just another hound (it's a pun, don't worry about it). Strange determines that Mordo and Dormammu are working together, but he's no closer to finding any information on "Eternity."

Commentary:

Yeah, we're still reviewing Fury comic books. It's happening. The Howlers are off to rescue a hostage this ish (guess you gathered that from the cover). What's that entail? More Nazi impersonation, if you must know.

Fury does reference the pain he's felt over Pam's death, although she is not named directly. So, there's that. Stan also gets a chance to flex his interpretation of a French accent in dialogue balloons. I guess he's getting tired of Percy Pinkerton. He's not the only one.

I'm curious to see another writer take over this book. Hopefully I'll find someone else's war stories more compelling.

Commentary:

Thor is phased into an "unsolid" being, kind of like this gal. Alas, it doesn't last long. And, it turns out it was Loki trying to help a brother out. Loki's attempt to help Thor spares him from Odin's wrath.

Thor also handles the Destroyer, although the battle is not without cost, as his hammer is damaged. But Thor, being the Norse handyman that he is, plans to take it to the forge and fix it.

In the backup story, Thor assembles his team to learn what has cracked Odinsword. Hogun the Grim, Fandral the Dashing, and Volstagg the, er, enormous. The '78 Dolphins it's not, but Thor's confident he can get the job done with the warriors three (this marking their first appearance). Also, Odin thinks Ragnarok is coming. Ragnarok is kind of a big deal.

Quick Thoughts:

Volstagg has fifteen kids. Fifteen. Normally I don't do a quick thoughts if I only have one thought, but in the case of the prodigious and potent loins of Mr. Stagg, I thought I'd make an exception.

Commentary:

The issue opens with an upset Ben Grimm. His recent return to Thing-form has him pretty distressed, which makes sense given that most people wouldn't want to look like an orange rock. Still, he does have the love of Alicia Masters, and he is part of a popular superhero team. It's not like he's got nothing going for him, or like he spends his days riding insects around. Yet there he is, catching a ride on the back of a pick up truck out of town.

Medusa asserts herself among the Frightful Four, and some of her earlier leanings away from evil seem to have dissipated. There is still no proper explanation of who she is, although that has to be coming.

The issue ends with a brainwashed Thing about to put the pounding on Reed and the rest of the Fan 4.

Quick Thoughts:

The issue of who pays for the damages in a superhero fight is raised, although not solved (it never will be)
Alicia Masters appears with brown hair

Commentary:

DD shows some reluctance to taking part in an experimental eye operation, as he's nervous that such a procedure could have a negative effect on his other heightened senses. What a hero.

Also, the romantic triangle between Matt, Foggy, and Karen continues to develop. Foggy realizes that Karen longs for Matt, who also only has eyes (no puns here, no puns) for her.

Daredevil travels to Lichtenbad, a fictional European country which doesn't really appear again in the proper MU. Then again, that could be because it is run by a tyrannical dictator who Daredevil helps topple. If they can solve the problem that quickly in Lichtenbad, why can't they ever get the situation in Latveria fixed?

Commentary:

The Swordsman shows up to audition for a place on the Avengers, and ends up getting into a tussle with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. I suppose Stan has cooled down on the hero vs. hero combat of late, so I'll forgive him this one. I'll doubly allow it here, as the Swordsman turns out to be a rather substantial ass rather than a hero.

In fact, the Sworsdman is such a bastard, that Captain America would rather hurl himself to his own death than name Swordsman as the leader of the Avengers. We'll see how that decision pans out for him next issue.

Quick Thoughts:

Cap is still waiting for an answer to his letter from Nick Fury, because Fury never got it! Hydra stepped in
Hawkeye's origin (and connection to the Swordsman) is revealed

Commentary:

Our lovely tale picks back up where it left off, with Spider-Man the prisoner of the Green Goblin. With a little bit of luck, and the timely arrival of a few police officers, Spider-Man is able to bust loose.

Spidey is convinced that one of Jameson's employees (our pal Foswell) is either the Green Goblin or the Crime-Master; unfortunately Crime-Master bites the dust about a panel later, and well, Foswell ain't no Green Goblin.

This issue also addresses the matter of why Spidey doesn't sell his pictures to someone that's a little bit less terrible. The Daily Globe, a competing newspaper, is too nosy when Peter Parker brings them pictures of Spidey's latest fight.

The fact that this panel is a few inches a way from being explicit notwithstanding, I thought the perspective used here was pretty cool. That Ditko guy is a cut above the rest!

Commentary:

We delve into the origin of Professor X, including the death of his father in an atomic blast, his rearing at the hands of a cruel stepfather, and the introduction of his step brother Cain Marko, douche bag.

This issue does a decent job of framing the long exposition of Xavier's past in the impending threat of the Juggernaut attacking the mansion. Stan also shows restraint in not fully revealing Juggs' appearance until the end of the issue.

The story breaks on a cliffhanger, with Juggs breaching the team's defenses and ready to face Professor X.

Quick Thoughts:

Cyke hollows out a log with his "power blasts," so they appear to be more concussive as opposed to heat focused as they were in earlier stories
Xavier's powers appear to have come to him early in life, as he used them as a young boy
Cerebro somehow detects Juggernaut, a non mutant
Charles began to lose his hair while still in his teens, but hey, he was one hell of a track star
Xavier served in the Korean War

Commentary:

This issue opens with what would appear to be a classic example of the failings of writing comics using the marvel method of scripting. Stan has Giant Man swinging from a flag pole high up in the city, and then on the next page he's back on the ground. A couple of thought bubbles and captions with heavy exposition explain how he got from one place to the other. In a lot of ways, seeing these kinds of things has a certain charm to it. Something about the good nature and zest of Stan's writing goes a long way in forgiving many of these sins.

Yeah, so then Giant Man grows a wasp to a size big enough that he can ride on it. Maybe it's not that charming after all. Pym announces his retirement at the story's end. Seems fair enough to me.

On the green side of life, Hulk turns into Banner, Banner turns into Hulk, there's some fighting with the Leader, Hulk appears to be dead at issue's end, and you've got yourself a comic book. Seeya next time, kiddies!

Commentary:

Stan kicks off the splash page with the line "If you think this title-illustration doesn't make sense, just wait'll you read the story!!" I'm not quite sure that's the best approach, but kudos to him from veering away from the usual "This is the best comic book ever!"

Anyways, fresh off his recent quitting, Happy's on his way to Ireland, and Pepper is none too pleased that Iron Man/Tony Stark didn't put up more of a fuss regarding his abrupt departure.

This issue features the return of Count Nefaria (our pal who created some grief for the Avengers a little while ago), who creates a dream world in which Iron Man is pitted against all the great foes of his past (and some of the not-so-great ones as well).

Also, Stark is referencing events as recent as Tales of Suspense # 45 as happening "years ago." This prolonged early stretch of time in the Marvel Universe will be condensed in the future history. It seems that comic book time is condensed as it moves forward. For example, events happening in comics right now (as in being published today) that might reference events "a year previous" (in comics time) will, when viewed ten years from now (our time), have taken significantly less comics time. If you followed that trail of thought, well, what are you doing reading my blog?!? Go get a job with NASA! But, point being, "years" didn't pass between Tales of Suspense 45 and 67, as Stan claims.

Anyway, Happy agrees to return to Stark's employ, and Count Nefaria fails with his dream machine.

The Captain America story ends on another cliffhanger, with Cap still under the mind control of the Red Skull.

Commentary:

Indulge me for a little while here as I go over the setup of this issue. The Watcher, who can, we assume, see everything - and interfere with nothing - shows up to tell the Fan 4 about some new threat that could destroy the universe. But Reed and Sue are out (where? probably at the movies, the grocery store, mayhap finalizing the marriage license) and so the Watcher settles on Thing and Torch tackle the problem alone. Yes, that's right, the all powerful being who sees everything can't find the guy who ran out for milk, and with the fate of the universe on the line, he settles for what's available. This is the dude we have watching over our planet? Christ, no wonder things like this are allowed to exist.

The only saving grace is that this issue features Kang the Conqueror jousting (like, on a horse). There's also Merlin granting the Human Torch his powers back at one point. So yeah, all's normal here. Thing asks Kang if he writes dialogue for Thor. Heh.

In the backup tale, with the help of Clea (who still has not been officially introduced to Strange), the Doctor is able to hold off Dormammu and Mordo for the time being. The Ancient One bids Strange to find someone called Eternity before lapsing back into a coma. So, next issue, the quest for eternity begins (not to be confused with this quest for eternity).

Commentary:

Fury gets into a healthy competition with another squad of Commandos as they compete to decide which group will go after Strucker and his Blitzers, who has taken over an allied castle in England.

Guess what? The Commandos win the argument to fight Strucker, and then they handle the Nazis. Surprising, I know. The pattern seems to be that a good guy dies every twelve issues or so, but otherwise, the Commandos complete their mission, and there's not much more to it than that.

I should've done a count on the number of times Percy Pinkerton says "bumbershoot." Too late now. I am not rereading all of these Sgt. Fury comics.

Commentary:

Thor's disruption-of-communism-intermission having concluded, he thus prepareth to return to Odin and prove that Loki cheated during the trial of the gods.

Unfortunately, Thor runs across a big game hunter (no, not that big game hunter) and is felled by, well, a sleeping pill. Kind of disappointing to find out that you can fell a Norse god with a blowgun, but anyways, our story continues. Thor fights a robot created by Odin called the Destroyer, who is awakened by the interference of Loki (obviously). The Destroyer is a rather bland villain, although he is able to throw Thor's hammer.

Alas, Loki has outsmarted himself, as if Thor is killed by the Destroyer, he knows Odin will eventually find out it's his fault, and no one wants a PO-ed Odin. So Loki must try to save his brother.

The issue ends on a cliffhanger, with Thor trapped in the floor, and Loki trapped in the dungeon of No-Escape (yes, that's actually what it's called).

In the backup story, Thor prepares for his quest to discover who broke Odinsword.

Commentary:

The FF are still powerless, and locked in combat against Doctor Doom, who has taken control of their headquarters.

Daredevil lends a helping hand, and he cracks wise in this story more than once. It's almost as if Stan thought he was writing Spider-Man instead.

Reed ultimately saves the day, as he is want to do, using the "Electronic Simulator," a device that was last used to defeat the Skrulls, as seen here, to give the team back its powers. Stan has to write up some pretty clever explanations about why Reed didn't just use the thing last issue, but that's neither here nor there.

This is all an elaborate set up to get to what this issue is really about, which is the hand to hand fisticuffs between Thing and Doctor Doom. The adventures of the new look Avengers continue as Captain America and crew take on communism. Sometimes when Stan uses the term the Reds, I think of these guys.

I really enjoyed the beginning of this issue, as Stan spends some time focusing on Captain America's issues with being, as he puts it, a living anachronism. We also see how the other team members enjoy spending their free time. Captain America's query to Nick Fury has still gone unanswered, although it is referenced once more.

Quicksilver questions Captain America's decision for the team to get involved in international affairs, although it is Hawkeye that backs up Cap's decision.

Anyways, the team fights the Commissar, who's actually a huge robot. Boo communism. Right?

Commentary:

While the Crime-Master is staking his claim to half the city, Peter Parker is busy trying to convince his aunt to tell him where she dumped off his Spider-Man costume. He ends up buying a new version at a costume shop.

For once, though, Flash Thompson does the right thing. When he overhears Parker taking the blame for something at school, he confesses his own involvement to the principal. In terms of non villain rivals, Flash comes off as a more decent person than Jameson.

The issue ends on a cliffhanger, with Green Goblin and Crime-Master fighting over control of the underworld, and Green Goblin using his capture of Spider-Man as proof that he'd make the better leader.

Quick Thoughts:

More references to Mary Jane; Betty Brant's met her, but we still haven't!

Liz Allan somehow breaks up with both Pete and Flash Thompson, although I'm not sure she's actually dating either of them.

Commentary:

Well, the Human Top, who tried to kill Giant Man a while ago, tries to kill him again. No matter how you slice it, Human Top is not a good name for a super villain. When you hear the phrase Human Top, you don't think of fear, or terror, or even mild discomfort. You think of someone spinning around like a moron. Maybe you even think of dizzy bat.

But Top's not gonna let a little thing like being a loser get him down. Oh, no. What he's gonna do is replay prior events in his mind while Giant Man is unconscious and could easily be killed. When you're Human Top, you're already starting from behind, so when Giant Man presents you with a lay up, you have got to capitalize. Also, you can't spend your time making a new costume that makes you look like a fly swatter. Sometimes Super Villains just don't understand, man. We'll have to wait till next issue for Giant Man to rock his world.

On the jolly green side of the mag, Stan further establishes that Hulk has ups, as he's leaping and bounding around mountains, and even crossing the Atlantic. Leader, who has been laying plans for the last eighty-five issues (or so it feels), finally unleashes his attacks, and it's...pink robots. Christ. Is anybody else ready for Maximum Carnage? I just want a super villain that treats the job with respect.

Attuma the underwater villain causes trouble again, so Iron Man's got to balance that against the chaos in his personal life when Happy Hogan quits. This kind of makes sense, as Happy Hogan really doesn't do a whole lot. Still, it was a cushy job, no?

Iron Man manages to prevent Attuma's conquest of the surface world, but with Happy Hogan gone, and him losing out on a big government contract, Tony Stark's troubles have just begun. Man, I could have written the "next issue" blurbs for these comics.

In Cap's story, we learn a little of the Red Skull's Les Miserables lifestyle in his formative years. Hint: He's no Jean Valjean. The issue ends on a cliffhanger as Red Skull has hypnotized Cap into thinking he's a Nazi.

Stan gives us the ole en media res opening in this one, with Torch and Thing going up against a revamped Puppet Master, who happens to look even more like Uncle Fester. Stan doesn't immediately reveal that its Puppet Master come to plague our heroes, but longtime readers will pick up on Stan's copious number of clues.

The duo handles the villain, but, interestingly, they don't even mention the skirmish when their lady friends show up late to the party. You would think Alicia would have a right to know what's happening given her relationship with the Puppet Master.

Meanwhile, Strange is traveling through dimensions and getting involved in a family conflict on an alien world. We also see another shot of Clea, although we learn nothing in regards to her identity.

As you might expect, our man Nick Fury takes the death of his girlfriend (as seen last issue) pretty hard. On their furlough, he takes his Commandos off to find the Nazi who ordered the air raid that killed Pamela.

Stan doesn't have a problem with said Nazi hurtling to his death, but he does not have his hero, Fury, kill him in cold blood. Even in wartime, Stan likes to keep his heroes a little cleaner. While this makes sense for heroes like Spider-Man, who's really just a kid, or the X-Men, you'd think that he wouldn't mind having Fury really off a Nazi.

Nevertheless, Fury gets his revenge, and the Commandos do not get their furlough.

So, there's a couple different things happening this issue, but most importantly is Odin's pink hat. The Norse god is big pimpin. Apparently, he still requires proof in certain situations that Loki is lying, though. Odin, you should know better.

What starts as a struggle to prove himself to his father turns into a conflict in the middle of Vietnam for our hero Thor. Still not quite sure how that happened. But, naturally, Stan turns the tale into a morality play about the horrors of communism. Stan did not want to make an enemy of Senator McCarthy. Thor's effort to prove himself to his father will have to wait until next issue.

In the backup story, Odin shows his sons Odinsword. If Odinsword is ever drawn, it shall mean the end of the world. Alas, Odinsword has a crack in it, and Odin bids his sons to find the cause. The quest begins next issue.

It's a rough time for the team to come up empty handed, as Dr. Doom is brought out of the hypnotic suggestion that he had defeated the Fantastic Four (as seen here). Also, Matt Murdock returns as the team's legal counsel, which was decided after his encounter with them and Electro (seen here).

The team has to really on Daredevil's skills and Reed's smarts to survive, as Dr. Doom uses their own weapons against them. The issue ends on a cliffhanger, as the team is still powerless and in combat against Doom.

Doom's really got to seal the deal on this one. His enemies are powerless! If he doesn't defeat them now (he won't), how does he still get off with being so arrogant?

Well, the issue opens on Daredevil pleading with a young damsel to not stop screaming, and things only heat up from there, when Daredevil goes toe to toe with...Stiltman!

Yeah, having big stilts apparently gets you through the qualifying round of "Who wants to a Super Villain" in the mid 60s. It was a wild time back then. You could scan braille for the latest patent laws quick as a wisp, your boss could steal your inventions, you could check people's pulses with your hearing as a reliable lie detector; anything was possible in those days, and a young Matt Murdock was at the cusp of it all.
So Daredevil cuts Stiltman down to size, and if you think that's a bad pun, you haven't read half as many Stan Lee comics as I have.

The new-look Avengers begin their search for the Hulk, which has a rousing beginning with in-team bickering. Then, the team gets a clue from a robot as to the green goliath's whereabouts. Why they decide to follow this robot's advice is anyone's guess, and of course, it's not Hulk they find, but Minotaur, a servant of a Blogged and Boarded favorite, Mole Man.

So, you know, Mole Man gets pounded, and the team ends the issue with a new found respect for one another. That's a pretty substantial Super-villain fail.

Is this the first jump the shark moment in the adventures of young Spider-Man? Perhaps. J. Jonah Jameson suits up in a spidey-killing death robot. Some would say that's taking their "friendly" rivalry a step too far.

I don't quite know how it's legal for Jameson to actively hunt a person through this horrible looking robot, but then again, I didn't really understand how Kraven could try to hunt down Spider-Man either.

More important than this is the almost-appearance of Mary Jane, although her face is concealed by a well placed plant in her debut panel.

This issue also brings about the demise of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants as we know it, as Magneto and Toad are carted off into space by the Stranger, Mastermind is turned to stone, and Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch leave to join the Avengers. I guess that means we'll see some new villains next issue.

Anyways, our two heroes battle against an alien with the power to steal the abilities and knowledge of scientists. The alien loses, and is never heard from again. Kind of ho hum. One interesting factoid was that Giant Man is at his strongest at twelve feet tall. Beyond that, most of his power is drained.

On the Hulk side of things, he escapes the Iron Curtain, only to be captured by marauders once he returns to Bruce Banner form. Glen Talbot comes to rescue him, but the issue ends on a cliffhanger as the two are last seen plummeting to their death. I suppose as they're not hanging on the edge of the cliff it's not really much of a cliffhanger, but you get my drift.

Then the perpetrator steals the Iron Man armor! Christ on a cracker, Stark, get an ADT Security system or something. Fortunately, all this stupidity does lead to Tony Stark having to break out his original armor in an all Iron Man showdown, and that's fun.

In Cap's story from the WWII era, he and Bucky take on a Red Skull impersonator.
Quick Thoughts:

Stark gets referred to as Mr. Big. Sarah Jessica Parker is nowhere in sight.
The Captain America story is written in an older time comic book style reminiscent of the 1940s

Some dude from NASA shows up to talk to the Fan Four about space. About time I suppose, given that the Fan Four was at one time astronauts.

Alas, Johnny's got other problems, as Doris breaks up with him for being stood up one too many times. Fair argument. But, of course, three pages later she's trying to figure out how to get back into his life.

Thing at one point has a dialogue balloon that's just full of random letters, which appears to be one of the earliest instances I can recall of Marvel using random punctuation to replace F-bombs and such.

Anyway, Johnny has to return earth in a daring escape from a spaceship. Fortunately, he does not turn into the Phoenix Force.

Dr. Strange's story features him battling Baron Mordo, who is channeling the powers of Dormammu. It ends on a cliffhanger.

Fury is almost as disinterested in the mission as I am, although for a different reason: He's decided he's in love with Nurse Pam, and plans on asking her to marry him. He almost loses the engagement ring in combat, but manages to recover it. Close call!

But alas, Fury's beloved is killed in an air raid. As Stan says, we'll have to see how the grief changes Fury in the next issue.

Thor and Loki are thrust into the trial of the gods, because Odin is...unhappy, or something. But wait! Baldur believes that Loki is bringing about some trickery. Loki? Really? Yes, it seems the god of tricksters has, once again, deceived his father, by playing dirty in the trial of the gods and putting the life of Thor's beloved Jane Foster into danger.

The issue ends of a cliffhanger, as Loki apparently wins the challenge. This issue is also very much embedded in the other stories taking place in the Marvel Universe at this point. There are shots of the Avengers meeting where they call for more members, Daredevil racing off to fight Namor, and the Frightful Four wondering if they have truly defeated the Fantastic Four. Very typical of the Marvel Universe when Stan was in charge.

In the backup story, Thor throws a goblet at a king's crown, and somehow comes out of it the hero. In other words, Loki is really bad at his job.

The most important development of the issue, and one of the most important in the Marvel Universe so far, is that Paste-Pot Pete comes to the realization that Paste-Pot Pete is just a horrible name. So he starts calling himself the Trapster. This probably isn't going to win any prizes at the super-villain awards show, but it's a small step, and I for one am proud of Pete.

Then he goes and does a thing like using remote controlled asbestos tape, and all my new found respect just goes right out the window.

Anyways, the team beats the Frightful Four, although at issue's end, we see Thing transforming back to his normal human form in a cliffhanger moment.

It's time to expand the roster. A number of characters we've already been introduced to are joining the Avengers. And these are some of the Avengers mainstays.

For those who think that the idea of shaking up a team's lineup every few issues is something more in touch with the modern era, keep in mind what Stan has done with the Avengers since we began. He replaced the Hulk with Captain America after only a few issues, and now, about a year later, he's changing the team dynamic again. And, in fact, the team is now devoid of any of its original members, as it's just Captain America, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Hawkeye.

All of the characters joining the team (Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch) started out their careers as evil doers, but now they've found a home with Marvel's mightiest super team.

Iron Man gets a little tearful as he leaves the team, but we all know he'll be back again someday, just like all the other Avengers who have left the team at this time.

Betty Brant is still writing to that guy Ned Leeds, and Pete doesn't like that one bit. Really, that's the least of Parker's problems though, as the dude starts hallucinating.

Wouldn't you know it's Mysterio impersonating as a psychiatrist trying to help Spider-Man? Of all the lousy tricks. Ironically, Spider-Man is saved from revealing his identity by J. Jonah Jameson. The questions of Peter's mental stability made this one a fairly enjoyable read.

Very trippy panel. I also thought it was cool how they placed some of the dialogue upside down. While it might not be much, this was a little bit more experimental in style than a lot of the other rather straightforward displays of panels and dialogue.

Commentary:

The villain in Giant Man's tale is Madam Macabre, who has loyal henchmen named Gogo and Kayla, both of whom look exactly like the creepy dude Omar (not that Omar) from the last issue of Tales of Suspense.

Apparently, Madam M. received her training at the hands of the Mandarin, and if Giant Man spent a little more time talking to Iron Man, he'd know the Mandarin is a bad dude. But alas, he is not aware of the evil of which she is capable. Doesn't really stop Wasp and Giant Man from getting her locked up by issue's end, though.

On the green goliath side of the mag, Hulk's still fighting the communists, and the Leader still wants to team up with Hulk. After all, according to Leader, they are the only two green skinned creatures on the earth (She-Hulk hasn't been invented yet...or Anole...or...). Hulk's story doesn't conclude at the end of this issue either, making it more of a continuing saga at this point. It's certainly becoming one of the longer multi-part stories Stan has put together by this point.

So, Black Widow continues to show signs of wanting to repent from her evil ways, but the Iron Curtain is relentless, threatening her parents if she doesn't defeat Iron Man. But, of course, both she and Hawkeye are no match for our man Tony Stark.

Also, it's still clear that Pepper is in love with Stark, and not Happy Hogan. The workplace love triangles of Stan continue.

Cap's story, set in the WWII era, features the tale of Sando and Omar (not that Omar). Sando's a creepy Nazi spies whom Cap puts the beating on. Omar is just a weird looking dude, and that's no crime, so he's free to go. American Justice!

The Mad Thinker is a bit of a jackass, and being that Thing and Torch are all around noble guys, he decides he's had enough of them. That, and the two heroes prevent him from blowing up a bridge. His plan is more or less to fight them using a glorified bowling ball. Guess who wins?

Meanwhile, the Doc is still fighting Baron Mordo in Hong Kong, and Mordo has the criminals of the city searching for his foe. It's good to see Strange flash some physical prowess this issue in his handling of these miscreants. Strange escapes Hong Kong, only to surely fight Mordo another time.

Anywho, this issue focuses on the team trapped in the jungle, and helping keep a member of the Nazi party alive. Of course, the Nazi then begins to question whether he is misjudged non-Aryans. He decides to help out the Commandos, but he's dead by the end of that panel, so that's that.

Stan promises a death next issue, so we've got that to look forward to.

Commentary:

So, Thor has flown off earth in pursuit of Jane Foster in Asgard. He leaves the Absorbing Man behind. This raises a good question, which is where does Thor's loyalty lay? Is it with Asgard, with earth, with himself? Does he owe anything to the people of our planet?

Also, Thor gives Jane Foster the "gift of forgetfullness" upon returning her to Earth. Again, there is no question about the morality of tampering with someone's memory. Really, I should just stop bringing it up, because it's all over the place, and no one seems to think twice about it. Consider it "forgotten."

Just as its predecessor did, this issue ends on a cliffhanger, with Thor headed back to Asgard to fight Loki in the Trial of the Gods!

The team is in full preparation for Reed and Sue's wedding, but that doesn't mean they can't squeeze in an adventure or two.

Anyways, the Fan 4 is up against the Skrulls again, including Morrat, who looks like a Skrullian version of Clark Gable. The Skrulls were last battled here. The team goes to get justice for the death of poppa Storm.

So, there's some Skrulls, and some fighting, and Clark Gable Skrull takes the dirt nap. The team makes it back to Earth in time for the wedding rehearsal, so all's well that ends well.

Commentary:

Namor decides to press his claim to the surface world through due legal process. Boy, he's a real fish out of water in the corporate world (yeah, I did it). The dude can barely work a revolving door, but he somehow makes his way to Murdock's law offices.

Namor's arrival at the office is genuinely entertaining. He's breaking elevators, slamming the door, and just generally making an ass of himself (as he so often does).

This issue is also the debut of Daredevil's red costume, which will become his mainstay from here on out. His costume is one of the most static in all of comic-dom from this point on.

There's also a cool moment this issue where Namor regards Daredevil as a truly courageous hero, given his handicap, and decides that he is indeed quite noble. It was cool to see Namor give DD his props. All in all, this was a pretty solid issue, and a good early meeting between these two characters.

Before we get started, and lest you worry, Giant Man's still walking around in that absurd blue and red costume.

Also, Steve Rogers writes a letter to Nick Fury, who is involved in counter-espionage, thus once more tying Nick Fury back into the fold of the present day Marvel Universe (and making me feel a little less terrible about reading all those Sgt. Fury comics). This doesn't play out this issue, so we'll have to see if it's brought back up.

Anyways, Baron Zemo is back on the attack with his usual bunch of cronies, and they really need a new color scheme. Everyone is in shades of blue and green. Zemo's the only one of the bunch with a little oomph in his outfit!

Alas, though, this issue is the "death" of Zemo, and when he is dead, Cap claims that at last, he has avenged (yes, avenged) the death of his former sidekick.

Of course, Cap does not deliver the killing blow to Zemo, but by the same token, he's not particularly helpful in keeping the guy alive. There is a little more blood lust in this early Cap than there may be in future tales. Interesting to see Steve act in such a way.

Next issue promises a shakeup to the lineup, so that should be exciting.

So, the Green Goblin is actually having to pitch himself to take over as leader of an organized crime ring. Interesting watching one of the future prime time villains of the Marvel Universe, and someone who will for a time take over national security, making his pitch for why he should take over a small time crime ring.

This issue is typical Spider-fare. Fights with gangster, calls to his aunt at inopportune times, fights with Green Goblin, the works.

Commentary:

Big Ka-Zar and trusty pet Sabre-Tooth Tiger Zabu make their mighty Marvel debuts. Alas, Ka-Zar is not a mutant, as Prof X can tell with his Cerebro machine. Of course, Ka-Zar also means the Savage Land, which is one of the fantastic locations of the Marvel Universe, and the site of many X-Men related adventures to come.

Ka-Zar doesn't speak the best English, and this of course leads to a minor skirmish with the X-Men (well, that and Iceman freezing Zabu). There's also a Jurassic Park-like episode featuring Jean and Warren.

At issue's end, Ka-Zar bids the X-Men to never return to the Savage Land. Like that'll happen.

Anyway, Giant Man's got a new solution that lets him shrink or grow the size of things around him. He's also got a new costume designed by lover gal Wasp, and it's amazingly even worse than his old costume.

Anyways, Hank spills his shrinking/growing solution, and it lands on a spider. This is not the result. So, Hank and Jan fight an enormous spider in a very Honey I Shrunk The Kids episode of Giant Man and Wasp.

In Hulk's story, he is at the hands of the communists, because Stan hasn't brought them around in a while. Come on, you know it was time.

Commentary:

Well, Tony Stark's closest friends still think he's dead and not Iron Man, so it's a tough time for our armored hero. However, Stan's decided he's had enough of Iron Man being trapped in his suit, and deus ex machina's Stark into coming up with a solution.

However, not content to leave drama out of the question, Stan now has Stark pretending that he's engaged so that Pepper will give up on him and move on to Happy. Quite the liar this guy is. There's some lame villain called the Phantom who shows up as well, but this story is more about the angst.

Cap's origin is told in his story, and features an appearance by a then-alive and well Bucky Barnes. Apparently Bucky's father died in G.I. training, which is just about the only thing I learned from this story. The rest is Cap's standard origin. Apparently starting with next issue though all of the Captain America stories are going to be set in the World War Two era.

It's 1965, and Beatlemania has swept over the country. It's affected the mighty Marvel bullpen as well, as this issue features an appearance by the Fab Four. This features Thing and Torch going to extreme heights (sometimes literally) to deliver their girlfriends to a Beatles concert on time. Of course, they also have to recover the money that was due to the Beatles for putting on the concert, and this takes up most of the issue. Wouldn't you know, Ben and Johnny end up missing the show? Also, despite the Beatles being drawn in this issue, they don't actually have any lines.

Baron Mordo returns on the Dr. Strange side of things. He's attacking Strange, and he's got help from Dormammu! The story ends of a cliffhanger as Strange prepares to face their combined might.

Commentary:

According to the credits, this issue was written "at white heat" by Stan Lee (not that white heat), so we're already off to a good start.

Anywho, this issue marks the first appearance of the Absorbing Man, who will remain a mainstay villain in the Marvel Universe for many a year. What I did not realize is that in his initial origin story, it is the trickery of Loki that grants him his power. I wonder if that'll be retconned in a decade or two.

On the other end of things, Jane and Thor (or rather his alter ego) seem to be getting along swimmingly, which is a refreshing change of pace from the feelings of love left unexpressed in most of the other stories we've got running right now. Of course, being a superhero mag and all, Thor does ditch Jane to go off and fight a super villain, but really, who could fault the man for that? The story ends on a cliffhanger, with Thor riding to fight Loki, who has captured his lady love.

In the backup tale, Stan spins the yard of Little Red Hiding Hood, Norse-style. The story is actually a french fairy tale originally, although there are similar elements in the Norse Poetic Edda).

Commentary:

Well, Reed and Sue are now happily engaged, and well on their way to becoming the primary reason that the Fantastic Four are really considered a superhero family.

Unfortunately for them, old friends like Paste-Pot Pete, Sandman, and the Wizard don't really give a damn, and decide to team up to challenge the Fantastic Four. They induce a woman called Medusa to join their clique, and together they form the Frightful Four.

Of course, there's a lot more to Medusa's story than meets the eye, but her back story will mostly remain a mystery for now. The Fan 4 defeat their evil counterparts, but the baddies escape, which means they'll all be around to cause chaos sometime in the future.

Favorite Panel: Sue and Reed's hilarious engagement party. You've got Invisible Girl serving Prof X cake, Jean Grey doing the watusi, Thor admitting some jealousy because Reed can do what he can't (get married); it's all good stuff. It's also the kind of thing that made the early Marvel Universe such a charming place, as you never knew who'd drop in.

Thor reveals that he can't help as Dr. Blake, because apparently he's not a good enough surgeon. Interesting. The son of Odin should have paid more attention in med school, I guess.

So, there's only one doctor who can save her. Wouldn't you just know that the doctor who could perform the miracle operation just so happens to be the doctor who is being held by aliens from another galaxy? The very same.

So, the team rescues the surgeon, and also stops an intergalactic war from breaking out across earth between alien races. Oh, and Wasp is fine.

Commentary:

The Ringmaster (surely you remember him!) has already finished his prison term, thus proving that the legal system in the Marvel Universe is a joke (sorry, Daredevil!). But the circus of crime isn't sticking with the Ringmaster for a leader. Oh, no. They need someone with guts. With cleverness. With charisma! They choose a circus clown.

That works out about as well as you might expect. Spidey spends a large portion of the issue trying to determine how to handle Princess Python, as he doesn't want to hurt a woman. Quite noble. By issue's end, the entire Circus of Crime is apprehended again, victim to greed, circumstance, and Spidey.

Commentary:

The Giant Man story in this issue was written by Leon Lazarus, who worked on many Marvel comics in the years proceeding the super hero era. Don't worry, it was edited by Stan Lee, so every sentence still pretty much ends with an exclamation point. Excelsior! Seriously though, there's some interesting information in Leon's wikipedia article about why this is Leon's only story working for Marvel in the 60s. Worth checking out.

Anyways, there's trouble in paradise when Jan leaves her Giant Man for an issue. Then Attuma, last seen getting pounded by Namor and the Fan Four, returns. There's nothing like beating an underwater-sea-creature-dictator into the ocean floor for fixing what ails a relationship, and by issue's end, Giant Man and his gal are in love again.

On the Hulk side of things, Hulk's tussles with the Leader, the US Government, himself, and everyone not named Rick Jones continues.

Commentary:

Apparently more than 500 fans requested to learn the origin of the Mandarin, and Stan, giver that he is, decided to oblige them. Mandarin's father was a direct descendant of Genghis Khan, so that's likely where he gets his charming personality.

Basically, Mandy's (Iron Man's nickname for him, not mine!) parents die, but instead of getting raised by an Alfred Pennyworth, he gets raised by a real bitch. So, he grows up to be a real asshole.

Mandarin figures out that the legend of dragons in China stemmed from a super intelligent alien being, who happened to leave behind his space rings, which give Mandarin his power. Iron Man's not really impressed, and beats Mandy up. Mr. Stark is still stuck in that darn suit of his, though!

In Cap's story, he handles a prison riot single handed. Just another day in the life, yo.

Commentary:

Torch's gal makes a reference to what a sweet young man Peter Parker is. I doubt Stan's going to build this up into a full fledged love triangle, but the rivalry between Torch and Spidey is nonetheless fun.

So yeah, then Thing and Torch fight some bad guys, and so on and so forth. As Stan says at story's end, let's change to Dr. Strange!

The Doc is in the house, and he fights Tiboro, who used to rule the world, but then didn't (who knows why), but now wants to again. The Doc is having none of it, and puts the whooping on Tiboro. Then, Strange-pants (I'm trying out every nickname I can think of here) makes a bunch of guys forget they ever learned of his mystic power. Ethical questions are not raised, of course. Yep, this comic is still happening. Fury is awesome, but everything else is, well, the same. The typed German accents are sleazy, the Commandos are one note characters, and the war is the war.

In case you couldn't tell, this is not my favorite marvel comic.

This issue does tell the story of a young boy who can never learn the truth that his father is actually a patriot, even though it's assumed he's a traitor. So that's alright, I guess. But these war comics are tough to get through, I must admit. A happy new year to all.

This story basically opens up with Stan Lee explaining that Jack Kirby wanted to draw some epic Norse ass kicking, and Stan granted the request. Whether that's the truth behind the early pages of this story and their lack of relevance towards the rest of the tale is unknown, but it does provide a few cool action shots by Mr. Kirby.

Meanwhile, Thor and Odin are still fighting about Thor's love of Jane Foster. This would start to seem boring, except Thor actually comes clean and reveals his true identity to Jane! Except that Odin steals his power and he can't become Thor until he really needs to and then Jane's not there and so Thor decides he doesn't really want to tell her the truth and so the status quo remains. Yeeseeh. Oh, and the Grey Gargoyle returns.

We see some of Loki's boyhood in the backup story. Hint: He was kind of a brat.

Commentary:

Dragon Man, despite his rather lame name, is a staple in the Fan 4's rogues gallery, and he makes his first appearance here.So, Dragon Man is a lifeless husk that the villain Diablo breathes life into, which of course raises the question of what, exactly, he is. Stan seems to make a strong point of Dragon Man not being a robot, but what this seems to imply is that Diablo has the power of giving life. This is quite the heady topic for a Stan Lee issue of Fan 4.

This issue, Daredevil takes on the second most famous fellowship of all-time, The Fellowship of Fear!! Yes, the second most famous fellowship is well behind the first in popularity. And, hey, it might not even be the second most famous. Anyone who can think of another fellowship, let me know.
But anyways, this is the first appearance of Mr. Fear, who will remain a prominent villain in the MU for a long time. This differs from the Enforcers, who are kind of...the worst.

Mr. Fear used to run a wax museum, but don't worry, because that has nothing to do with the rest of his story. I guess I shouldn't be too harsh, as the wax museum setting does give the artist a chance to draw plenty of Marvel characters, albeit stiff ones.

Count Nefaria makes his villainous debut, and he is a bit of a unique bad guy, as he believes the way to strike his foes is not through violence, but rather attacks on their reputation.

So, it's the Avengers against the US government this issue, and that's a welcome change of pace from the Avengers fighting other super heroes. The public is afraid of heroes after the Avengers are impersonated doing evil things. It's crazy how many of these stories foreshadow the Marvel crossover Civil War, and it's surprising that no one wrote something like Civil War earlier in the Marvel continuity.

Apparently when the baddie called The Beetle, last seen here, is set free from prison, the US government gives him back his armored costume. He claims there's no law against having said "armored costume." This seems like a bad call on the part of the government. Might want to work on those laws in the coming years.

A lot of time is spent on the differences between the lifestyles of Torch and Spidey, and Peter Parker is more than a touch jealous of Torch's popularity. So, then some other stuff happens, blah blah blah, and Torch and Spidey end up fighting each other.

Betty Brant also spends most of the issue in tears, thinking Parker has ran off with another girl (he hasn't).

The X-Men are off on a field trip to Europe to reunite with Professor X, who is in pursuit of a foe called Lucifer. The Avengers are after the same man. I think you can predict what happens next.

If your answer was a miscommunication leads to heroes fighting heroes, well, you would have been correct.

The team stops Lucifer, spoiling his diabolical scheme to more or less destroy the world. Good deal. Professor X is back with the team, so I imagine we'll see Cyclops stand down next issue.

Commentary:

What's Giant Man up to these days? Well, he's swinging around town, meeting up with police officers, apprehending bad guys, etc. Wasp gets taken out of the action by a can of bug spray. We meet the Wrecker. It's all pretty much par for the course.

Sadly, despite having so many fewer appearances, Hulk has a much stronger supporting cast than Giant Man. That trend continues with the introduction of the Leader, who, despite having a terrible name, is one of Hulk's arch rivals in the coming years. They share a gamma ray connection. Leader got smart when he was hit with gamma rays (as opposed to Hulk, who got, you know, hulking). This story merely sets the stage for future conflicts between these two.

Commentary:

So, Tony Stark is still trapped in his Iron Man costume, and Pepper and Happy aren't too happy that they haven't seen their boss in a month. So, they quit!

Tony has to prove to them he's still alive, while also hiding the fact that he's trapped in his Iron Man costume. That's good for a panel or two of comedy.

Anyway, Iron Man gets captured by the Mandarin in a story that's continued in the next issue, where it is promised that we will hear his origin.

In the Captain America story, the Cap heads over to Vietnam. Stan is in dangerous territory when he puts his heroes into this real world conflict, although it is still rather early in the time frame of the war. We'll have to keep an eye out for whether or not Stan continues to involve Marvel in the Vietnam War as the conflict continues during this time period in the real world.

Cap then fights a sumo wrestler, so you never know where Stan's heading.

Commentary:

Thing and Torch cross paths for the first time with Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Quicksilver suggests that the two leave Magneto's service, but Witchy reveals the reason the two began to serve him in the first place, which is that Mags protected Scarlet Witch when a mob would have killed her for "practicing witchcraft." This is similar to how Professor X saves Nightcrawler from being killed by a mob for his looks. How many mutants chose to follow one ideology over another simply because of mutant kind's figureheads got to them before the other?

Anyways, if you've been following along for the last couple of months or so, Stan Lee is in love with pitting his sympathetic characters against each other. So when Quicksilver and Witchy seek out the Fan 4, wouldn't you know that the X-Men have just released pictures to the world of Magneto's "Band" of Evil Mutants.

Combat ensues. Thing ends up in an asbestos straight jacket. 'Nuff said.

In the backup story, Dr. Strange fights a rather boring baddie who calls himself the Demon. Kind of ho-hum. Strange needs a supporting cast. Bring back Clea!

Commentary:

Well, I hope you all enjoyed Captain America's appearance last issue, because now it's back to all Howling Commando all the time.

Stan spends about two panels trying to further develop the individual Commandos, and then it's once more into the fray. Perhaps I shouldn't be too hard on Stan. He does tie up some loose ends this issue, like letting us know what happened to a skipper who was last seen in issue 10. I'm guessing that some of these panels are the results of readers writing in and asking these questions, so if that's the case, that's cool.

Baron Strucker returns at a special request from Hitler, who also makes an appearance. Strucker seems to think Hitler's a nut job, but of course he follows orders. Is this a clever and subtle reference by Stan to the Nuremberg Trials. Probably not, but a guy can dream! At least it's cool that Strucker is now a recurring villain, and he's got his own squad of anti-Commandos.

Of course, as the Marvel Universe continues to grow, we will encounter time and again the re-envisioning and expansion of stories told in Marvel comics past. This is merely the beginning of a popular trend.

The backup story reveals that Loki is not truly a son of Odin, but rather is the son of one of his enemies, found after Odin has slain his father. Well, that kind of a explains a few things, doesn't it? Hey, you killed my dad, so...I'm going to try to ruin your life.

I gotta give Stan credit on this one, as he credits a more unique villain in Gideon. He's not a mad scientist, but more of a financial powerhouse who is tasked with defeating the Fantastic Four in order to buy out his competitors. Also, we see that Gideon has a son who clearly loves him dearly. The issues' end is rather touching, as Gideon renounces all of his money to spend more time with his family. For some reason, despite the fact that he tried to destroy the Fantastic Four, the team is moved enough to let Gideon go. Not bad, Stan.

Of course, the originality stops there, as most of the issue is spent pitting the team against each other. Superhero vs. Superhero!?! That's crazy!

It's a New Year, and Stan's not breaking stride, as he introduces another classic villain in his first issue of 1965. Also, I should note that this issue was probably still released in 1964, due to the strange publication dates on comics. Anyway, onward with the Scorpion.

The story opens with someone trailing Parker, as J. Jonah Jameson wants to know how Peter gets all of his amazing photos of Spider-Man. Adds a little credibility to Jameson just accepting that this kid gets to take all sorts of pictures of Spidey.

Jameson, in his attempts to undermine Spidey, ends up causing more damage than he actually wanted when the Scorpion is set free on the world. You'd think this would teach Jameson a lesson, but if it did, he wouldn't be Jameson.

This is our last issue of 1964. We're almost there! We'll be talking about the Clone Saga before you know it! 1964 was another big year for Marvel. Super hero comics are really starting to dominate Marvel's publication lineup. It's an exciting time, as many classic heroes and villains made their debut in 1964.

Giant Man doesn't end the year well; he accidentally grows a plant the size of a skyscraper, loses his costume, and has someone discover his real identity.

In Hulk's story, he absorbs the impact of an entire gamma bomb. So Hulk is a touch more serious than Giant Man. We also hear mention of "The Leader," with promises that we'll see more of this villain in future issues.

Things aren't going so hot for Tony Stark, as he remains trapped within his Iron Man suit (not literally, just if he wants to, you know, stay alive).

Black Widow and Hawkeye return, and Black Widow continues to mislead Hawkeye into fulfilling her wishes. Black Widow gets captured by the Ruskies while Hawkeye is off fighting Iron Man. So, a number of things are up in the air at the end of this issue. Iron Man still can't get out of his suit, Pepper and Happy don't trust him given Stark's sudden disappearance, Hawkeye is on the loose, and Black Widow is captured. Now we've got some things happening. Go Marvel.

In the backup story, Captain America handily defeats an Army of Assassins, just for fun, really.

Commentary:

Johnny Storm has got an attitude, as he's frustrated with Reed Richards for, well, no real reason. See, Reed is awesome at everything he does, and Johnny, being a "hotshot," has a hard time accepting that. He proposes that the Fantastic Four doesn't need a leader. After all, the Avengers don't have one, and they do alright for themselves.

After Johnny wastes his time reciting all the foes he has beaten, Reed tells him he doesn't really give a damn what Torch does. Thing is actually the one who doesn't want to break up the FF, which is quite a turnaround from where he was in the earliest days of the team forming.

Mr. Fantastic then decides to prove that he's the best by thwarting Torch and Thing at every single turn. Yes, this entire comic is basically a grand standing for Reed to be able to ask his teammates who their daddy is. Reed: 1, Torch and Thing Team up: 0, Mole Man: o.

And in the backup story, Strange's first encounter with Dormammu ends with him assisting ole Dormy in holding back mindless creatures from destroying everything. Dormy is displeased that he needed Strange's help. After Strange returns to earth, his master explains that one day Strange will replace him.

Alright, finally something interesting happens in this comic. Captain America is a savior, in more ways than one. Fury is a little jealous of all the adoration the Cap seems to attract. Funny how much time Fury spends upset about Captain America's costume and (super) heroics, and how the latter part of his career is spent frequently in service to heroes like Cap. Perhaps it's because when Fury sees Cap in action, well, that's when he starts singing a different tune.

Also of note is that Fury unknowingly stands up for a young Captain America in a bar room brawl. Kind of neat.

This issue, we learn a little of Odin's past. It seems that he too was once in love with someone who was forbidden to him, just as Thor loves Jane Foster. For this reason, Odin decides to help Jane Foster stay alive. Of course, he then trusts Loki to help with that process. Fortunately, Odin's pals don't trust Loki any further than they can kick him down the rainbow bridge, so they do their best to prevent the trickster from causing any more harm.

Baldur plays a key role in this story, as it is he who manages to deliver the medicine to Thor that saves Jane Foster's life. Also, Mr. Hyde and Cobra have nothing. Zip.

In the backup story, Thor fights Sigurd, son of the Earth Sprites. Thor gives him the rock down.

Namor's old flame returns after last appearing in the first Fan Four annual, and she needs the Fan Four to help Namor save his kingdom from a conquering bad ass named Attila, I mean, Attuma.

Reed has developed a solution to allow the Fan Four to breathe underwater. It also lets Torch flame on underwater. Reed is pretty much a beast at everything. It makes you wonder if Reed could have invented anything that Marvel's other main inventors had created if he set his mind to it. Could he have created Henry Pym's shrinking and enlarging pills (no jokes, please)? Could he have built Iron Man's suit? Basically, is there a limit to Reed's brilliance?

Alas, Namor doesn't find out that the Fan Four saved his ass, and so they are destined to fight again. I'm sure we'll see that fight within the next couple issues.

Favorite Panel:

A rare full page spread of a location. Here, Kirby shows the depths of the ocean. There aren't a lot of full page spreads in any early Marvel stories, let alone ones that are completely focused on landscape. Almost makes you wonder if they realized they were one page short and had to throw in some filler.

Daredevil runs up against the Matador, a dude who uses his red cape to rob armored vehicles (don't ask). Daredevil's first few encounters with the villain do not end favorably. In fact, Matt Murdock happens across two children playing as the two characters, and neither of them wants to play as Daredevil. Not good for the ego.

However, pride cometh before the fall, as Matador then gets the bright idea to rob a burglar alarm manufacturing company, figuring himself as a robin hood figure. Daredevil researches the Matador, discovering how the public hated him when he was a bullfighter. So all this super villain wants is love.

Daredevil beats him up and turns him over to the authorities.

Commentary:

Giant Man shows a little grumpiness about having to deal with his fellow Avengers. But then, Giant Man is always kind of a pain in this ass.

Kang monitors the Avengers from his headquarters (you know, in the year 3,000) and decides the best way to defeat them is to send a robot of Spider-Man to fight them. There's got to be some sort of super villain training camp where they can show aspiring do-badders the moves not to make when plotting against one's enemies. If there isn't, someone should start one. Hey, you'd stand to make a decent amount of money.

So the Avengers fight a Spider-Man robot, and then the real Spider-Man shows up to set things straight. The team figures out that Kang is behind all this villainy, but their next confrontation with Kang will have to wait for another issue.

Commentary:

Stan Lee might be the only writer ever to use the exclamation point more often than the period and get away with it. Every line of dialogue uses them! It's crazy!

Anyways, the Enforcers return, working with Sandman. Spider-Man frees the Human Torch from their clutches, and then the two get trapped in his webbing. This is actually a pretty funny incident, and showcases the inexperience of these two heroes. It's the kind of stuff you won't see these characters screwing up twenty years down the line.

There's also a shadowed figure plotting against Spidey at issue's end, adding further intrigue as to what's to come in the next issue. Again, as the Marvel stories have gained popularity, it seems that Stan has continued to build a more cohesive and continuous narrative.

Commentary:

Cyclops is really getting into taking over for Xavier; here we see him walking around in a suit and instructing the rest of the team in their (post graduate) training.

Beast quits the team at one point, but then returns shortly thereafter to help build a device that will stop the X-Men's new foe, Unus the Untouchable. We also get a cameo from Mastermind, as Unus is trying to join Magneto's brotherhood.

Commentary:

Perhaps the tales of a man who catapults himself into a bed of ants are waning in popularity, as Hulk gets top billing on the cover of this issue. The Hulk story picks up where it left off last issue, and it actually leaves us with another cliffhanger. It's almost as if Stan is using a more modern approach here, with each issue paving the way for the next. This is a style perfected later by Christ Claremont, whose work on X-Men we'll get to in about 2019 at this rate.

The Ant Man story (which is actually the first story in this issue, but I thought I'd mix things up a little) features the villain Egghead. Egghead builds android, Ant Man defeats android, story ends. Let the good times roll.

Commentary:

And so the Captain America/Iron Man double feature era of Tales of Suspense begins.

The art in the first story is a little different, as the facial features of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts are drastically changed from earlier efforts.

Also, Black Knight points out that he knows how to find Iron Man, and its by attacking Stark's factory, given the close relationship between the two. So, if the villains know where to find you anyway, isn't having a secret identity more trouble than it's worth? The story ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, as it seems that Stark cannot abandon his armor for fear to his health.

The Captain America story features the first appearance of Jarvis, the Avengers' longtime butler! In his first appearance he is referred to as Tony Stark's personal butler. Otherwise, this story is rather bland, as Captain America wipes the floor with a number of common thugs.

Commentary:

Alright, we're back in action after a few days off from the Thanksgiving holidays.

Don't worry; according to the Mad Thinker, his plan has a 99.99% chance of working. This is a comic about the .01%. It's also yet another exciting round of let the heroes fight each other for the first half of the story.

This story is somewhat more interesting in the sense that our two heroes never actually encounter the villains.

The backup story is more interesting, as Dormammu makes his first appearance. Dr. Strange has referenced Dormammu a number of times, but now he's here in the flesh...so to speak. Dormammu's reality is properly trippy. Ditko gets to flex his Salvidor Dali muscles in a lot of these Dr. Strange stories, creating worlds that are entirely removed from our own. Also, Clea, a critical member of Dr. Strange's supporting cast, makes her first appearance. A big issue for the Doctor, and the story is a two parter!

Yikes. I'm not gonna beat around the bush here; I really don't have anything to say about this comic. The Howlers fight Nazis in a ludicrous fashion. Fury's a hard ass. Happy Sam's a bigger hard ass. Percy is a bundle of British nonsense. I'm hoping Stan gets something going in this comic soon, as it's not maintaining my interest much at all. The best thing about this issue is the pinup of Fury in the back.

Commentary:

Well, Loki's back on earth, and now he's paying the bail for Mr. Hydre and Cobra in the hopes of forming a coalition against Thor. Stan is using the super villain team up to greater effect, as he now has cabals of evil going in both X-Men and Avengers, and now in his solo Thor stories.

Anyways, Thor has to fight his way back into Asgard, which is pretty cool, as he takes on the entire city and wins. The issue also sees Thor pull a semi-Superman move to keep Jane alive. And it's a two parter to boot!

The backup story is one of Odin's military campaigns, in which he stages a wise retreat. And so, until next issue, may the eyes of Asgard smile down on thee..

Just a casual conversation at the end of the working day, nothing to see here. Pay no attention to the slop-house climbing in through the window.

Commentary:

Reed changes Thing back into human form, and cautions that the change could be permanent. We see that this upsets Torch, who has apparently really taken to Thing being a part of the team.

Ben suffers from amnesia after the transformation. It's just one of those side effects Reed forgot to mention before the process started. Oops. So, he reverses the process, and that's that.

We also learn the story of Sue and Johnny's dead, who lost his wife and then lost his marbles and went to jail. Tough times. Then Super Skrull, our buddy from times gone by, masquerades as the elder Storm and goes on a crime rampage. Disappointingly, Reed doesn't turn him into a cow. And, unfortunately, Sue and Johnny's dad dies saving the Fan 4.

Commentary:

So, Immortus is the new villain that stops by to chat with the Masters of Evil. His first move is choosing Paul Bunyan to fight with Executioner. This is how he chooses to display his power. The Masters of Evil are impressed, which is a good indicator that they don't really have a good proof of concept for their little villain organization.

Anyways, the Masters of Evil want Immortus to kill the Avengers. Naturally, this leads the Avengers into fighting each other. I don't know how many more hero vs. hero stories I can take.

The team then faces off against a bunch of mythical figures of ages past, such as Goliath and Merlin. Thor does fight Hercules, so there's that. Enchantress decides to move everything back in time a week to before the team encounters Immortus, so it's as if the fight never was. If she's this powerful, shouldn't she be able to take down the Avengers single-handed?

Commentary:

After running away from the Green Goblin last issue, Spider-Man is looking like a pretty big coward. Of course, he only ran away to help Aunt May, but the fickle public doesn't know that. Spider-Man is going to find himself getting into a lot of trouble due to his aunt over the years, with nothing more serious than his Faustian deal in the "One More Day" story line of a few years ago.

His fear for Aunt May extends to even not interrupting a crime for fear that something might happen to him, and then Aunt May would have no one to look after her. From there, it's all downhill. He can't get a date with Betty Brant, he tries to sell the solution to his webbing formula, Aunt May's running out of medicine...it's a big mess. Fortunately, by the story's end, Spider-Man is ready to return to his crime fighting ways. They could have called this one "How Spidey got his groove back." Stan puts Spidey through the ringer like none of his other heroes.

Commentary:

The issue opens with Ant Man yelling at his fan club. Well, no wonder this guy's popularity is in the toilet all of the time. Ant Man also makes a reference to a friend of his, an FBI agent who last appeared here. I don't remember this dude at all, to be honest. Guess I'm forgetting some of the minor characters I've met along the way thus far.

Ant Man tells the story of his first wife, a Hungarian freedom killed by the Reds (not those guys). Still, the story doesn't take that serious of a turn, as Pym is hopping back on flying ants and thwarting communist plots to train super smart gorillas.

Hulk takes over the backup stories as promised, transforming Tales to Astonish into a full fledged superhero magazine. In this issue, Banner discovers the manner by which he transforms from Bruce to the Hulk and back. Apparently it is caused by situations where he is in great duress. Hulk also fights his own robot (which he can't defeat), and wears a lot of purple pants.

Commentary:

Kraven and Chameleon, last seen bumbling around here, return for...who knows? General unpleasantness, I suppose. Kraven gets captured in about five panels, and then Chameleon pretends to be Captain America. So, you know, that naturally leads to Cap and Iron Man duking it out for a while.

The hero vs. hero fight is rising beyond commies and mad scientists to the top of Stan Lee's favorite plot lines. Also, next issue will begin featuring Captain America on a regular basis in the backup stories. Huzzah!

Commentary:

So Strange Tales is now Marvel's premiere team-up book, as it now features Thing and Torch each issue. Stan kicks off the new era with more references to asbestos.

This issue is pretty heavy on the action, with Thing and Torch fighting Namor most of the time. Not much in the way of story beats, until the end, when it's revealed that Mr. Fantastic had finally gotten Namor to agree to meet with him to talk peace. Thing and Torch unknowingly put an end to that. Oops.

In the backup tale, Dr. Strange fights Mordo...again. Strange could really use a supporting cast at this point. And the Master doesn't really count. It's about time for Strange to have a love interest that he thinks is unrequited, but really isn't. It would only be fair.
Quick Thoughts:

Torch refers to Namor as "Web Head."
Whilst in water, Torch can make his body hot enough to steam the water

Commentary:

The Commandos get a temporary new commanding officer, Captain Flint, and he's a real pain in the ass (think David Schwimmer in Band of Brothers). It's all a lesson about how what sometimes works in the classroom, so to speak, doesn't actually work in practice. And, blissfully, Captain Flint has learned his lesson by story's end.

We also learn that the Commandos' actual commander, Happy Sam Sawyer, was the man who originally organized and trained the Commandos. It's good of Stan to start building out the back stories of some of these guys, as the all out war action is starting to get rather tiresome.

Quick Thoughts:

Joe DiMaggio and Shirley Temple are both referenced
Every issue of Sgt. Fury ends with Stan saying, in regards to the next issue, "Be here, and that's an order!"

Commentary:

The story begins at the World's Fair, with Thor admiring a statue of himself. No one ever said our Norse neighbor was humble. There's also a statue of the X-Men, because the entire world doesn't hate them yet.

Thor doesn't meet the X-Men in this tale, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. He does destroy Magneto's base of operations, but Magneto seems to blow through these at an alarming rate, so I have no doubt he'll land on his feet.

Quick Thoughts:

Magneto has them scanning for the X-Men's location, and he has them based somewhere near Manhattan
Don Blake had a date scheduled with nurse Jane, so good to see some progress on that romantic front (even though he had to cancel it)
Magneto refers to his transportation as the Magni-Sub
The backup story deals with "Arkin the Weak," who's a cousin to Loki of clearly lesser repute

Commentary:

Some people just don't know when to quit. Take, for example, your friend the Mole Man. We've seen him fail here, and here. But the double M is at it again. His plan is to take Sue Storm hostage, under the assumption that then, everyone will let him take over the surface world. That plan won't work! Heroes are more clever than that! What's this guy been doing, livin' in cave (I went there)!?!?

The Avengers get in on the action, and Reed has to step in to prevent the Avengers from flying off the handle while Sue's life is still in danger. The Avengers are displeased. We'll have to see if there is any more tension between the teams in the coming tales.
